With a simple blood draw, the dihydrorhodamine (DHR) test can determine if a person has chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) or is a carrier of CGD.
DHR Collection Kit directions for patients.
The DHR test requires that 2 vials of blood are collected at the same time: 1 from the person getting tested and 1 from an unrelated, healthy donor.
Once the donor is identified, an appointment needs to be scheduled to have blood drawn at the same time at either the healthcare professional’s office or nearest Quest Diagnostics Patient Service Center.
The appointment should be scheduled between Monday and Thursday before 1 PM so that samples can be processed appropriately.
Do not schedule appointments on a Friday, over the weekend, or the day before a holiday. If the HCP suggests getting blood drawn at a center, there is a Quest Diagnostics Lab Order Form in the DHR Collection Kit that should be given to the lab staff at the appointment. Along with the ARUP Laboratory Requisition Form, this form MUST be filled out by the HCP before the blood draw appointment. The information should match on both forms.
The entire DHR Collection Kit—including the forms completed by the HCP’s office—must be taken to the blood draw appointment.
The DHR test will be processed, and the HCP will share the results only with the person being tested in 1 to 2 weeks. The control donor will not see the results.
If you have any questions, review the checklist below this video.

PATIENTS: Tips for the proper use of the DHR Collection Kit
DHR Collection Kits are sent directly to healthcare professionals, who either perform the blood draw in their offices or send the collection kit to a laboratory. Because the testing process has some very specific steps, it’s important that healthcare professionals, patients, and lab staff know how to use the collection kit properly.
Find a healthy, nonrelated control donor to take the test at the same time as you or your child.
- Two samples of blood must be collected: 1 from the patient and 1 from the donor
- If a patient needs to go to a Quest Diagnostics Patient Service Center for their blood draw, they should schedule 1 appointment for both blood draws
Schedule blood draw for Monday through Thursday before 2 PM so the blood sample can be shipped the same day.
- Blood-draw appointments should not be scheduled on Fridays, weekends, the day before a holiday, or late in the afternoon
Patients should bring the entire DHR Collection Kit to their blood draw, including the:
- Completed requisition form (“ARUP Only” envelope)
- “Patient Instructions” envelope
- Quest envelope for the lab staff if a Quest Diagnostics Patient Service Center is being used
Patients with questions about the test or test results should contact their healthcare professionals.

Check the INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING YOUR DHR COLLECTION KIT to see the 2 forms that must be completed if the blood draw is performed in the healthcare professional’s office or at a Quest Diagnostics Patient Service Center.
The DHR Collection Kit includes instructions that explain how to use the supplies inside to properly prepare the 2 specimens, package them, and ship them for processing.
For the DHR test, it is vital to clearly identify who is the patient and who is the control donor.
Lab staff should draw at least 3 to 5 milliliters of venous whole blood into one of the vials provided, then fill out the Patient Specimen vial label and affix it immediately after.
Next, draw at least 3 to 5 milliliters of venous whole blood from the healthy, nonrelated donor as a control sample. Then fill out the Control Specimen vial label and affix it immediately after.
Place both vials into the absorbent sleeve provided.
Blood samples are temperature sensitive, as live neutrophils are required, and should be kept at room temperature. The specimens should NOT be refrigerated, frozen, spun in a centrifuge, or shaken.
Place the absorbent sheet containing the vials into the styrofoam mailer. Then place the styrofoam mailer into the 95kPa bag then seal the bag.
Make sure the referring HCP has filled out the ARUP Laboratory Requisition Form.
The date and time of blood draw must be entered on the ARUP Laboratory Requisition form by the ordering physician.
Place all completed forms and the blood sample mailer into the provided FedEx® envelope.
Call FedEx immediately to schedule a same-day pickup. The kit must be shipped the same day as the blood draw to ensure neutrophils are processed within 24 to 36 hours.

LAB STAFF: Tips for the proper use of the DHR Collection Kit
DHR Collection Kits are sent directly to healthcare professionals, who either perform the blood draw in their offices or send the collection kit to a laboratory. Because the testing process has some very specific steps, it’s important that healthcare professionals, patients, and lab staff know how to use the collection kit properly.
Do NOT do any of the following to blood samples: refrigerate, freeze, add coolant, spin in a centrifuge, or shake.
Lab staff MUST ship the DHR Collection Kit the same day that blood is drawn. Overnight shipping should be used to ensure that blood samples arrive for analysis the day after the blood is drawn. A prepaid FedEx® label is included in the kit and lab staff must call FedEx to ensure same-day pickup of the completed kit.
